Harbour – Summer Living Room in Lahti

The Vesijärvi Passenger Harbour located next to the Sibelius Hall has become a meeting place for tourists and the locals of Lahti. The old storehouse buildings in the harbour area and the old railway

station have been transformed into cafes, restaurants and handicraft shops full of atmosphere. The restaurant boats operate as popular summertime terraces. The harbour has also become the centre of many summertime events: during the past years, the shore of Vesijärvi has operated for example as the stage for wine and beer festivals and fish and village fairs.

In the wintertime, a skiing and skating route on the ice of lake Vesijärvi travels past the harbour. After a refreshing outdoor exercise session, it’s wonderful to stop by to warm up with a cup of coffee – the restaurants and cafes in the harbour are open also in the winter!

Harbour of Lahti has become as

harbour area have been transformed into cafes, restaurants and

The Sibelius Hall, located close to downtown Lahti, on the shore of lake Vesijärvi is renown as a concert hall with magnificent acoustics and an excellent meeting and conference location.

Cruises on Lakes Vesijärvi and Päijänne

You can travel from Lahti on a route ship all the way to Jyväskylä, but you can also take shorter Vesijärvi cruises from the harbour on a paddle-wheel steamer or jump aboard an old-fashioned steam

boat that goes on a short trip on lake Päijänne via the Vääksy canal. During the trip, you’ll be able to enjoy bounty of the ship’s buffet table and admire the lake scenery.

The other harbours in the Lahti region, such as the harbours in Heinola and Padasjoki, are filled with cruise ships in the summertime. If you wish to embark on the water, you can board these ships and sail on the open waters of lake Päijänne, for example. For dedicated landlubbers, the wonderful scenery of lake Päijänne also opens in the magnificent lighthouse pavilion at the mouth of the Vääksy canal!

Vääksy canal and Padasjoki Boat Harbour

The heart of Asikkala is the Vääksy canal that was build in 1871 to facilitate the water traffic between lakes Vesijärvi and Päijänne. The idyllic canal area almost immediately became a popular tourist attraction; currently, it is the leisure traffic canal with the most traffic in Europe.

You can reach the canal on a bout of your own or on several route ships from, for example, Lahti or Heinola. Several events are arranged in the canal area especially in the summertime.

Padasjoki Boat Habrour has all the services needed for a great holiday. It is located only a couple of kilometres from the centre of Padasjoki and has about thirty places for guests’ boats. The pier is also a stopping place for the route ships and ships available on order on lake Päijänne.

Conquer the Lahti Region by Canoe

Lakes Vesijärvi and Päijänne offer an extensive canoeing route network surrounded by the clean lakeside nature and ridge scenery. You can hire a canoe and have a daytime trip for example to Enonsaari island, where you can spend a pleasant summer day swimming and roasting sausages on open fire.

The Lake Päijänne National Park and ridge Pulkkilanharju dividing lake Päijänne are a genuine treasure for those loving longer canoe trips. The national park is an archipelago unity worth seeing with steep cliffs, sandy ridges, small islets and nature trails. You can stop and rest or take a dip in the lake on the sand lagoons. The park is excellent for excursions on the water; almost all parts of the park can be reached by water only.

Tight Fishlines in Lahti Region

The versatile fish stocks of lakes Päijänne and Vesijärvi enable eventful fishing experiences at all times when the lakes are not frozen.
