Water activities in Vorpommern

The waters of the Bodden, the rivers and the Baltic Sea provide many challenges. The River Peene, situated in the most north-eastern part of Germany, and its surroundings are a great area to discover. The river originates in Lake Kummerow and, near Anklam, it flows into the larger Peenestrom which meets the Baltic Sea. The area around the River
Peene is the only fluvial topography in Germany to have remained pristine for the most part. The riverbanks vary a great deal from heath, reeds, forests to wide meadows. The Peene Valley is the home of many rare animals including beavers, otters and protected birds. Rare plants such as wild orchids are still growing here. Kayaking or canoeing in this area is a unique nature experience. Because the river is broad and smooth for the most part, it's very family friendly and perfect for beginners.

Vorpommern provides many areas perfect for windsurfing and kiting. There are smaller and larger lakes and coves such as the Lagoon of Szczecin, the Peenestrom, the Strelasund, the
Achterwasser and the Greifswalder and Barther Bodden. The wind conditions are just as different as the locations. The Bodden waters are very shallow and therefore provide ideal windsurfing conditions. Lubmin pier is always full of thrilled spectators watching the windsurfers. The coast of the Isle of Rügen is famous for its strong wind. Every other day, the wind strength is force 3 or above, thus creating perfect windsurfing conditions. The Isle of Rügen belongs to the best windsurfing areas in Germany.

The area around Rügen including its five peninsulas, its various neighbouring islands and numerous bays is a sailor's paradise. Ports have been extended and modified to meet the demands of the sailors and their crew. A sailing trip around Rügen is a fascinating experience because the coastal climate provides ideal conditions for a great tour. Sailors usually find good wind conditions in the summer when storms are rare.

Vorpommern, with its many lakes, rivers and the Baltic Sea is also a unique angler's paradise. The waters of the area are famous for its abundance of fish. The most popular kinds of fish here are cod, flounder, herring, zander, bass, perch, pike and carp.

There are many beautiful sandy beaches along the River Peene, the Bodden landscape, the Strelasund, the Greifswalder Bodden, the Baltic Sea, the Lagoon of Szczecin, on the Isles of Rügen and Usedom and on Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula. Most of these beaches are guarded by certified lifeguards and the currents are not very strong. Therefore, the beaches are very safe and great for kids. On most beaches you will find ideal conditions for a wide range of watersport and boating activities. In case it rains, there are many swimming pools which are perfect for the whole family.
