Water tourism and the river Dráva

Concerning the water tourism facilities, one of the most important destination is the River Dráva. It has its source in the Tyrolean Alps on the Austrian-Italian border, at 1228 metres above sea level. The Dráva joins the River Duna at Aljmas in Yugoslavia at 83 metres above
sea level, travelling 695 kilometres. The Dráva reaches Hungary at 237 river kilometres, and leaves the country at 70.2 river kilometres, entering Croatia. The distance between these points is approximately 170 river kilometres. The Dráva crosses the Hungarian-Croatian border several times in the Baranya and Somogy counties; quite often the left-hand side of the riverbank is in Croatia, while the right-hand side is in Hungary. The entire Hungarian stretch of the River Dráva is under protection, aiming to conserve the protected and strictly protected species.

Tourists visiting the river can take part in several kinds of water tours:

• You can hire a canoe and row on the river with a guide, in this case tyou can spend the nights at the camps on the bank (tours may finish at any of the above camps),

• You can also take part in a one-day tour (with no overnight stay),

• On the River Dráva, forms of water tourism involving paddling (kayaks and canoes) are preferred by the authorities, therefore the use of motorised boats for leisure is limited to 2 stretches (Barcs–Drávatamási; Drávasztára- Drávaszabolcs),

• Concerning pleasure boats, on the Hungarian stretch of the River Dráva there are two places where boat trips are allowed as well.

The River Dráva

According to the literature, and also in our experience, water tourism has an impact on an area of no more than 3 to 4 kilometres from the riverbank. As the map indicates, the impacted areas are the settlements of Őrtilos, Vízvár, Heresznye, Barcs, Drávatamási, Szentborbás, Drávasztára, Vejti, and Drávaszabolcs. If organised well, the tours may also include visits to Babócsa, Drávaszentes, Drávaiványi, Harkány, Siklós, Máriagyüd, Villány, and the city of Pécs.
