Sado Estuary - The Region

Considered the nucleus of the area covered by AFLOPS, the region in question is located in the district of Setúbal and has 510 360 hectares or equivalently
5100 km2.

Although the region contains large population densities and industrial clusters it has a great diversity of both protected areas and those important for the conservation of nature.

The approximately 50.000 ha of protected area in the region of Setúbal belonging to the National Network of Protected Areas represent nearly 10% of the total area in the region, a large number in comparison to the national average.

The existing diversity is great. It includes natural reserves like those of the Tagus Delta and river Sado, the natural parks of Arrábida (with Mediterranean characteristics unique in Portugal) the Southwest Alentejo and Vincentean Coastline and the protected landscape of Arriba Fóssil in Costa da Caparica. Still counting are the various other classified locations that whilst smaller in scale preserve important local values.
